Firefly Aurii Secret 4G by Firefly Mobile - Review

Update - July 20, 2017
After 8 months of use, the screen all the sudden went blank and started overheating. I tried several times to restart but it refused to be functional, it would continue to boot but there would be no display.  I went to the stall where I bought it, they opened the back panel and checked it out. They suggested to bring the unit to Firefly Mobile Service Center located at Compex, 341 GBW Building Quezon Ave, Tel# 354-4227, 354-8162, left my defective Firefly Aurii Secret 4G to John Daniel Francisco. Will wait for their advise.

Update - July 22, 2017
Got a call from John Daniel Francisco, they said my unit was tampered and they cannot honor the warranty,  explained to them that I have never opened my phone since the day it was bought, but I do recall buying the phone from an unsealed box. I explained to them that I was careful and never opened the phone since the date of purchase. John Daniel Francisco made it seem that I was lying and said the phone was tampered.  I asked for the manager, Berverly Manitane, she said that she can't honor the warranty because it has been tampered. How can it be tampered if it was Firefly that opened my phone in the first place. My experience with Firefly Mobile officially became a nightmare. The problem was with the board and the LCD, which will cost Php5,000 to replace. Thats a joke...

I take everything back; I will not recommend buying this phone or any of Firefly Mobile lineup again.

Its been a wonderful phone since Nov'16, but I guess its true what they say about Firefly Mobile, its really disposable.  I never had any problems with my Cherry Mobile units so Firefly Mobile takes the cake. Hopefully my experience is different from yours, maybe the service center refused to honor the warranty because of their fiscal issue; their mentality is probably "Why replace a Php5,000 board for free, if we can say that the customer broke the seal and make the consumer pay for it."  I guess a small fry like me don't matter to companies like theirs, but I believe in KARMA, thats all I can say for now. I could try to escalate the problem to the higher ups, but what is the point... I will try to consult DTI to see if they can help, but do you think the inconvenience can weight against the outcome of a broken phone?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is my hand's on semi review of Firely's Aurii Secret 4G - LTE, I got mine for Php 5,999 ($123) and comes with a free jelly case and tempered glass.

(Standard 1.5A Charger, Headset, and Free SIM)

This  new phone features an aluminum frame, 5-inch HD display, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, as well as an unspecified 1.3GHz octa-core processor, 16GB of expandable storage and 3GB of RAM. The official specs are indicated below.

  • 1.3GHz octa-core processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 5-inch IPS OGS HD display, 1280 x 720 resolution
  • 16GB of expandable storage
  • 13-megapixel rear camera Sony IMX258 with f/2.0 aperture
  • 8-megapixel front camera f/2.2 aperture
  • Dual SIM
  • 4G LTE, 3G
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, A-GPS
  • 3450mAh battery
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Initial Impressions: This is a heavy, solid and sturdy phone.

The overall built of the phone is impressive, the aluminum frame feels good and it has that premium feel to it. If you`re used to light plastic phones, this phone might not be suitable for you. Its quite heavy. I owned a Cherry Mobile Flare S3 Power with a 4200Mah and this beast is heavier than that. I am not complaining, but just a heads-up for those who might think this is a light phone.

Display: 5 inch IPS OGS HD Display, 1280x720 - 294ppi

The screen is quite impressive as well, the images are bright and with its 10 point touch capability I didn`t have problems txting. I have big hands and navigating through the menu was seamless. I had problems with my Flare S3 Power when it comes to txting, but this phone was easier and faster to use.

Music/Sound: Mediocre, but its gets the job done.

At first glance, I thought this phone features stereo output, but to my dismay only 1 speaker output works. It sounds a little thin when it comes to playing music utilizing its native speakers. I compared the output from my Flare S3 Power and the Aurii Secret lacks the bass and strength. The Flare S3's native speaker output was louder than the Aurii's. However, using headphones is a different story. The lows and highs are good even with the stock headset that came with it.

Camera: The Sony IMX258 f/2.0 aperture

The Sony IMX258 sensor is an upgrade from  the popular Sony IMX214, without going into technicalities the camera on the Aurii Secret is really impressive. The shutter speed is fast and images are crisps. Its wide angled lenses can capture good images in low light and good light.

Battery Life

Usability: Very Responsive, but No LED indicators
The Firefly Aurii Secret 4G gets the job done when making phone calls, browsing, txting, and taking pictures. One thing I didn't like is the lack of LED indicators. I know its a small thing but having LED indicator would've been cool knowing you're fully charged, missed a call, and when a txt message arrives. The strong selling point of the Aurii Secret 4G is its CAMERA, PROCESSING SPEED and RESPONSIVE USABILITY.

  1. How's the charging time and the temperature of the phone while you're using it and while it's charging? Because I read some reviews and they complain about the charging time and temperature. Also how many hours you use it in a day? Do you charge it once a day or once in 2 days? Thank you in advance for your reply.

    1. My experience with the charging time using the stock charger (1.5A) that came with it took about 1 hour and 45 mins from 0%, but other chargers with 2.1A took about 1 hour and 15 mins. Some fast chargers that has an output of 3.1A like Bavin Products can full charge the phone under 1 hour. Its common to have moderate temperatures during charging for lithium polymer batteries, but i have never experienced over heating with the device. The Firefly Aurii Secret 4G can last during the day if you're a heavy user. From my experience, 4G browsing / YouTube / not so much gaming, it could last me from 8am until 10pm at night. I usually just charge it once a day. thanks for the comment.

  2. I read somewhere that the Aurii Secret 4G has problems in network connectivity; that Globe and Smart sim cards do not have signals in the unit they bought. Did you experience any of that?

Also, can you compare it to the Flare X v2? Which do you think is better?

    Good review though. Thumbs up.

    1. I will probably add your question in the review. I had experienced this issue but the signal problem with the network connectivity is not caused by the unit itself. You see my old Globe sim had always been connected using a 3G device, so when I tried to use the 4G connection on the phone, it would always use the 3G network. At first I thought there was a problem with the unit, but it turns out you have to request for your sim (older SIMS) to have access to 700mhz LTE. It was a carrier issue, not the unit itself. The best solution is to buy an LTE sim to use 4G.

Sure thing, I'll have a side by side comparison of the Flare X V2.

    1. I am not so sure about the mark down, but there are two aurii secret in the market available. The aurii secret lite and the aurii secret 4g, the lite has been very popular as it has has better battery life due to its quad core processor, different camera lense, and only 3g feature. Its been 4 months now since i have been using the phone and its been remarkable, i threw everything at from playing games and photography, its really a great phone. Thanks for the comment Roy.

    1. Hello, gaming on the device is great, I haven't experience any lags on some of the games that I played. I'm not fan of 2k17 but when I tried playing it, the graphics were smooth. I have tried games like "Dont Starve", The Banner Saga, Riptide GP, Unkilled, Minecraft; and they were smooth.

  5. Hi, nice review! I've been mulling on buying this phone but what's holding me back is that I heard about the poor battery life of Firefly phones, they say that it drains rapidly. How was your experience with this phone in terms of battery life, responsiveness, multitasking and connectivity? I know I ask a lot but I hope you respond to my inquiries. Thank you and more power :)

    1. Hello Don, from my experience the battery life if good. I'm a moderate user and I don't play games on the go, however I do surf (4g), listen to music and take pictures. It can last me the entire day and if I'm not using it, standby power can last for 3 days. I constantly clean my background apps and your mileage may vary if you have a lot of background apps installed. Hope this helps. :)

  9. How many hours po para ma full charge yan pong aurii secret 4g

    ReplyDelete
  10. It takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes with the stock 2.0A charger, but if using a 3.1A charger takes about 45 minutes. Remember to put your phone in a cool dry place when using fast chargers. I prefer placing my phone on the floor, as the cool concrete can help cool the battery.

    1. I didn't understand your first question, but to answer your second question: Make sure you close all your open apps when you're charging, sometimes the camera is open or other apps when you're charging your phone. Multiple open apps can significantly drain your battery. Hope this helps.

  13. Sir may proof kayo na maliwanag pag magvivideo call sa messenger? bcos i had a problem with my aurii secret lite. laging madilim yung video ko i thought may problem sa settings ng camera pero wala naman same kame ng kapatid ko na problema

    1. I had no problems with video clarity with my Aurii Secret 4G using the front 8mp camera, the only issue is the image becomes grainy during poor lighting conditions. Your phone which is an Aurii Secret Lite has different camera lenses than an Aurii Secret 4G.

  15. Hello!

  17. I share your disgust over this "disposable" device and never again to be fooled by a mediocre company's hype advertising. I've owned this unit since last December and noticed the gradual decline of it's performance and speed as time went by. To cut the long story short, the device gave out by transforming itself into a what they call a "boot loop" mode. Question is, is this concern covered by the device's warranty? Appreciate your insights on this matter.

    1. I spoke to several people who owned the aurii line, the boot loop mode is a common problem. The usual fix is a reflash. Unfortunately, stock roms for firefly cant be found anywhere online. You have no choice but to bring it to their service centers. Trust me, they will ask every single transaction receipt to prove that you have bought it from them, otherwise no service for you. I know its been a month since this reply, i hope you found a solution to your problem. Cheers!

    1. Usual problem of all aurii secret lineup, bring it to your nearest stall to get it checked. By the way, dont let your device drain to 0%, there are plenty of feedback that theres a chance of a bricked board when the battery is completely depleted. So it its 1% to 5%, charge it right away.

  21. Pano po b ayusin ung aurii 4g ko biglabigla n lng po namamatay...

  22. ive been using my aurii secret 4g for 2 years now... and i definitely uhave no problem at all. ang prob ko lang since nabili is ung charger ny bigla nalang pumutok. so mga 1 month palang un since i bought. but the phone itself walang problema ang ganda po ng cam, and im a gamer so hindi din nagla lag... till now 2018 i still play coc or ml. the videocard also of this cp is nice ganda ng graphics. when charging it has red sign parang infrared na di naman nagbliblink. its a sign na its charging. it does multitasking and i dnt experience lags at all. best phone ever at cheaper price.

  23. Hindi maganda ang experience ko dito. Wala pang 1 year sira na ang audio Jack niya for earphones, dinala ko sa center nila pero hindi naayos, sabi nalang nila magpalit ako ng earphones, secondly, ang bilis Mag heat up ng phone pag magdedata ako super init Kahit social media lang binabrowse ko. Lastly bigla nalang namamatay at Dina mag-on unless isasaksak sa charger. Super bad experience. I never experienced this with my cherry mobile phone na tumagal ng 5 years till now OK pa cherry ko.
